On or around 10 September 2022, Nykaa, through its parent FSN E-Commerce Ventures Limited, completed the 100% acquisition of Iluminar Media Private Limited, the parent of Little Black Book. The deal had been approved by the Nykaa board on 5 August 2022. The headline price has not been publicly disclosed.

On the seller side of that transaction was Suchita Salwan, who had started LBB as a Tumblr blog twelve years earlier, in 2010, while working as a marketing executive at BBC Worldwide / BBC Entertainment India. It is one of the rare clean arcs in Indian internet land: indie blog to incorporated business to platform to strategic acquisition, with the founder still in an operating seat at the end of it.

2010: a Tumblr blog about Delhi

Suchita Salwan read economics at Hindu College, Delhi University, graduating in 2010. From October 2010 to May 2012 she worked at BBC Worldwide / BBC Entertainment India, running social media and media-buying. On the side, literally a side project to her day job, she started writing about Delhi on a Tumblr blog called “Little Black Book Delhi”. It catalogued the city the way a friend tells you to spend a Saturday: where to eat, what to see, which small brand to pay attention to.

That blog became LBB. By 2013, Suchita had left the BBC and incorporated the business as a commercial entity, investing roughly ₹70,000 of personal funds to set it up. The first audience was Delhi; the brand voice was unusually personal for what would eventually become a platform business.

2015: a co-founder and a pivot

In 2015, Dhruv Mathur joined as co-founder. The two of them moved LBB from a publication structure to a platform structure, from one editor (and a small team) writing about a city to a tech-led product where readers themselves could curate and rate local lists. The pivot took LBB out of pure publishing and into the category that would later be called “content commerce”.

The early funding arc reflected that shift. Angel rounds totalling roughly ₹1 crore came from Rajan Anandan and the Singapore Angel Network, with earlier institutional cheques from Blume Ventures and Chiratae Ventures (then IDG Ventures). In April 2019, LBB raised a Series A of about US$5 million, led by Inventus India and the IAN Fund, with Japanese investors Dream Incubator and AET Fund joining alongside existing backers. Across its life as a private company, total raised was around US$9 million across roughly six rounds, per Tracxn aggregates.

What LBB became

By the time Nykaa came knocking, LBB was no longer a Delhi blog. It was a multi-city discovery platform, with content and lists covering food and dining, fashion, beauty, travel, home, weekend plans, the kinds of discretionary, taste-led decisions where most consumers want a recommendation rather than a result. The platform also operated a commerce surface where small Indian brands could sell directly, leaning on the audience LBB had built up across cities.

That positioning, content that pulls you in, commerce that takes the buying journey from there, is exactly what made LBB a strategic fit for a beauty and lifestyle retailer of Nykaa’s shape.

August–September 2022: the Nykaa deal

On 5 August 2022, the Nykaa board approved the acquisition. On or around 10 September 2022, FSN E-Commerce Ventures completed the 100% acquisition of LBB’s parent, Iluminar Media. The strategic frame was widely covered in the Indian business press as Nykaa sharpening its positioning as a discovery-led retailer: a content engine that wraps around its commerce engine. The deal value itself has not been publicly disclosed.

What made the deal unusual on the founder side is that Suchita Salwan also wrote her own deal post-mortem, a public essay on why LBB chose Nykaa and how she approached the acquisition. That kind of primary-source founder writing about her own M&A outcome is rare in the Indian context, and it tells you something about her relationship with the brand she built.

2023–2025: a seat at the buyer’s table, then Airtel

In 2023, Suchita Salwan moved formally inside Nykaa in a content and brand-marketing leadership role spanning LBB, Nykaa Beauty, Nykaa Fashion and Nykaa’s own brand portfolio, effectively pulling the editorial layer across all of Nykaa’s consumer surfaces under one operator. She was later elevated to Senior Vice President, Nykaa Luxe, the group’s premium and luxury business. It was an unusually content-forward elevation for a beauty retailer’s leadership table, and a continuation of the same thesis Suchita had been working on since the original blog: that lists, brands and people you trust are the engine, not the marketing channel.

In December 2025, after nearly three years at Nykaa, Salwan joined Bharti Airtel as Chief Customer Officer, with a remit to drive growth and strengthen the brand across Airtel’s B2C businesses.

What Indian women founders can take from the LBB story

LBB is a clean reminder that the most durable Indian internet companies are sometimes built from a blog post. Suchita Salwan started without venture capital, without a product team, and without a category, she wrote about Delhi on Tumblr while working at the BBC. The business model emerged later. The team emerged later. The category emerged later.

For Indian women considering starting up, especially those who feel they need a fundable idea before they begin, LBB’s arc is the proof point that an audience built around taste can be the first asset of a business, and that a strategic exit can be the natural end of that arc rather than the loss of it. Suchita ended up running content and brand for the company that bought her.
