Udyam registration online, the free MSME certificate every small business should have
Udyam registration is the government’s free, Aadhaar-based MSME registration. It takes minutes, costs nothing, and unlocks cheaper loans, lower fees and legal protection. Here is how to do it yourself.
What Udyam registration is
Udyam registration is how a business officially becomes a recognised Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise (MSME) in India. It replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar system in July 2020. You register once on the government portal, and you receive a Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate that acts as your MSME proof for banks, buyers and government schemes.
The most important fact about it: it is completely free, and you can do it yourself in under fifteen minutes. It is built on self-declaration and linked to your Aadhaar and PAN, so there are no documents to upload and no fee to pay. Any site charging you hundreds of rupees for "Udyam registration" is a private agent reselling a free government service.
Who counts as an MSME
The MSME category you fall into depends on how much you have invested in plant, machinery or equipment and your annual turnover. The thresholds were raised from 1 April 2025, and they are generous, so almost every small and even mid-sized business qualifies.
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
Almost every home business, boutique, kitchen, salon or reselling venture sits comfortably inside the Micro band. Confirm the current thresholds on the Udyam portal before you register, since these limits are revised from time to time.
Why it is worth doing
An MSME certificate is not paperwork for its own sake. It is the key that unlocks a long list of concrete benefits, most of which matter to a small business trying to grow on a tight budget.
- Collateral-free loans under the CGTMSE scheme, and priority-sector lending from banks.
- A far cheaper trademark: ₹4,500 per class instead of ₹9,000, plus lower patent fees.
- Legal protection against late payment: buyers must pay an MSME within 45 days or owe interest under the MSMED Act.
- Eligibility for government subsidies, state incentives and tenders, many with quotas reserved for MSMEs and women-owned units.
- Registration on the GeM portal to sell to government departments.
- Easier, better-priced business loans and a cleaner path to schemes like PMEGP and Mudra.
What you need before you start
The list is short because the system pulls most of your details automatically from government databases.
- Your Aadhaar number. For a proprietorship it is the proprietor’s Aadhaar; for a company or LLP, the managing partner or authorised signatory.
- Your PAN, and the business PAN if it is a company or LLP.
- The Aadhaar-linked mobile number, for the OTP.
- Basic business details: name, activity, address, bank account, date of commencement and number of employees.
- Your GST number, if you are required to have GST (it is not mandatory for those who are exempt).
How to register, step by step
Step 1, Go to the official portal
Open udyamregistration.gov.in. Check the address carefully. This is the only official, free site; many look-alike domains charge a fee for the same form.
Step 2, Enter your Aadhaar and verify
Choose "For New Entrepreneurs," enter your Aadhaar number and name, and verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked phone.
Step 3, Validate your PAN
Enter your PAN. The system checks it and pulls linked details automatically, so you are not typing everything by hand.
Step 4, Fill the business details
Add your business name, type, address, bank account, main activity (manufacturing or services), date of commencement and employee count. Investment and turnover are pulled from your linked PAN and GST data where available.
Step 5, Submit and get your certificate
Submit the form, verify the final OTP, and your Udyam Registration Number is generated. The e-certificate, with a QR code, is issued online. There is nothing to pay and nothing to post.
No PAN or GST yet? Use Udyam Assist
If you run an informal micro business and do not yet have a PAN or GST, you are not shut out. The Udyam Assist Platform (UAP), run through registered bodies, lets Informal Micro Enterprises get formally recognised and brought into the fold. It is designed for exactly the smallest, home-run ventures that the main portal’s PAN requirement might otherwise leave behind.
After you register
Keep the certificate and your Udyam number handy, because banks and buyers will ask for them. Update your details on the portal if your turnover, investment or activity changes; the classification is meant to reflect reality. And treat the free registration as step one of getting properly set up, alongside a business bank account, GST where needed, and a trademark for your brand.
For a woman founder, Udyam is the single highest-value free thing you can do this week. It costs nothing, takes minutes, and quietly makes you eligible for cheaper money, legal protection and a shelf of schemes you would otherwise be locked out of.

Any micro, small or medium enterprise in manufacturing or services. From April 2025 the limits are: Micro up to ₹2.5 crore investment and ₹10 crore turnover; Small up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; Medium up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. Almost every home and small business falls in the Micro band.
+ – What are the benefits of Udyam registration?

The online form itself takes around ten to fifteen minutes, and the Udyam Registration Number and e-certificate are generated immediately after you submit and verify the final OTP.

It is not legally compulsory to run a business, but it is effectively essential to access MSME benefits: collateral-free loans, subsidies, the 45-day payment protection, cheaper trademarks and most government schemes require your Udyam number.
+ – What is the difference between Udyam and Udyog Aadhaar?
Udyam registration replaced Udyog Aadhaar in July 2020. It is PAN and GST-linked, self-declared, and issues a QR-coded e-certificate. Old Udyog Aadhaar holders were required to re-register under Udyam.
