What is the Lakhpati Didi Yojana?

The Lakhpati Didi Yojana is a central government programme with a simple, ambitious goal: help three crore rural women earn at least ₹1 lakh a year, on a steady basis, from their own small enterprises. “Lakhpati Didi” literally means a sister who earns a lakh. It was announced on Independence Day in 2023 and later expanded, and it runs under the government’s rural livelihoods mission, DAY-NRLM.

Here is the part most people miss. This is not a cash-transfer scheme where money appears in your account. It works through self-help groups (SHGs). If you are a member of an SHG, the yojana gives you skill training, hand-holding to set up or grow a micro-enterprise, and access to interest-free loans so you can fund it. The income target is the point; the loan and training are how you reach it.

That design matters when you apply, because there is no standalone “Lakhpati Didi online form”. The many sites showing one are misleading. Your route in is your SHG, and we will get to exactly how that works below.

Who is eligible for the Lakhpati Didi Yojana

The eligibility is refreshingly clear once you know it is built around self-help groups:

  • You are a woman, generally between 18 and 60 years of age.
  • You are a member of a self-help group registered under DAY-NRLM. This is the single most important condition. No SHG membership, no scheme.
  • You mainly belong to a rural household, since the mission is rural-livelihood focused.
  • Your family income is modest, in line with the mission’s low-income focus.
  • You have, or are willing to build, a small income-generating activity: tailoring, food processing, dairy, a shop, handicrafts, LED assembly, and so on.

If you are not yet in an SHG, that is your real first step, not a form. Ask at your Gram Panchayat, your local Block office, or a nearby Bank Sakhi or BC Sakhi about joining or forming one under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (aajeevika.gov.in).

What you get: training, an interest-free loan, and support

The scheme bundles three kinds of help, and they work together rather than separately.

Skill and enterprise training

Members get free training in trades that actually sell in rural markets, from food processing and tailoring to newer skills like LED bulb making, plumbing, and even drone operation and repair. The training comes with guidance on running the activity as a business, not just a hobby.

Interest-free loans up to ₹5 lakh

Through the SHG structure, Lakhpati Didi members can access interest-free loans, reported in bands up to ₹5 lakh depending on the state and the group’s track record. Because the borrowing sits inside a well-run SHG, you do not need the collateral a bank would normally ask an individual for.

Market linkage and mentoring

The mission also helps connect what you make to where it sells: local markets, government procurement, and digital platforms. That linkage is often the difference between a machine that sits idle and one that earns.

For how this fits alongside other options, our guide to government schemes for women entrepreneurs sets Lakhpati Didi next to Mudra, Stand-Up India and the rest, and business loans for women in India explains when to borrow and how much.

How to apply for the Lakhpati Didi Yojana

Since the scheme runs through SHGs and the rural livelihoods mission, the process is offline and community-based. Follow it in this order:

Step 1, Join a self-help group

If you are already in an SHG under DAY-NRLM, you are in the pipeline. If not, visit your Gram Panchayat or Block Development Office and ask to join or form one. This is the foundation the whole scheme sits on.

Step 2, Register your interest through the SHG

Your SHG, along with the community resource persons and the Block Mission Management Unit, identifies members for the Lakhpati Didi programme and helps you draw up a simple plan for your enterprise.

Step 3, Complete the training

Attend the skill and enterprise training your cluster offers. This both builds the skill and formally moves you forward in the scheme.

Step 4, Access the loan and start earning

With a viable plan and your SHG’s backing, you apply for the interest-free loan through the group and its linked bank, then put it to work in your enterprise.

One honest warning: any website asking you to “apply online for Lakhpati Didi 2026” and pay a fee, or enter your Aadhaar and OTP, is not official. The genuine route never runs through a random form. When in doubt, walk into your Block office and ask in person.

Documents you will typically need

  • Aadhaar card, with a linked mobile number
  • Proof of SHG membership under DAY-NRLM
  • Bank account details in your name (or the SHG’s linked account)
  • A basic outline of the enterprise you want to run
  • Residence proof, and income details if asked by your Block office

Requirements vary a little by state, so treat this as a checklist to prepare, and confirm the exact list with your SHG or Block Mission office.

How to actually reach ₹1 lakh a year

The scheme opens the door. Crossing the ₹1 lakh line is about picking an activity with real local demand and running it with discipline. Choose something people near you already buy every week: food, tailoring, dairy, a small kirana line, or a product you can make in batches and sell through your SHG’s network.

Price so you keep a genuine margin, reinvest early profits before you borrow more, and keep the simplest possible record of what comes in and goes out. If you want a sorted menu of options by how little they cost to start, our list of business ideas for women in India is built for exactly this, and how to start a business from home in India covers the free groundwork.

Thousands of women have already crossed that line from a standing start. The founder stories on Women Can Startup show the same arc again and again: one skill, one customer, then steady, unglamorous growth. Lakhpati Didi gives you the training and the capital. What you build with them is the actual story.
